According to an article in Rolling Stone, the lead singer of the band Bleachers, Jack Antonoff, is curating a music festival based in New Jersey. Rolling Stone sat down to chat with Antonoff about the Shadow of the City Festival, set to take place on September 19 in New Jersey’s Asbury Park. Bleachers will headline the festival, and the seven other acts are Charli XCX, Vic Mensa, the FrontBottoms, Mister Wives, Cults, How to Dress Well, and Robert Delong.
Antonoff had several inspirations to create the festival. His first inspiration comes from his love of music festivals. He says that he has played nearly every music festival, beginning with his first experience of playing Bonnaroo in 2005. He says the feeling of plugging in your equipment and then playing for thousands of people is absolutely exhilarating. His experiences of the thrill of festival playing coupled with those of what works and what doesn’t in a festival itself, Antonoff says, will insure that Shadow of the City is not like an ordinary festival.
Antonoff’s second main inspiration for Shadow of the City is his love for New Jersey. The name of the festival is inspired by the New Jersey’s good and bad proximity to New York City, relating to the idea that New Jersey music is often overshadowed by that of New York. Antonoff intends for the festival to have an atmosphere that celebrates New Jersey, including vendors that showcase New Jersey music and food.
