Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease in which the central nervous system is affected by the immune system due to a high dose of immune suppressive therapy. After a couple of experiments patients who have the MS condition have not had any serious infections such as brain lesion, disabilities or relapse. Furthermore, they did not take any medication afterwards. This is after going through a therapy known as high-dose immunosuppressive therapy and autologous hematopoietic cell transplant (HDIT/HCT). The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases sponsored the HALT-MS . It is believed that treatment with the HDIT/HCT can be of effective than treatment for a long time. The major symptoms of MS are weakness, fatigue, chronic pain and also speech difficulties.
The aim of the treatment is to prevent any disability by doing away with the disease-causing cells and maintaining the immune system. Doctors collect a patient’s blood-forming stem cells, give him a high-dose therapy to remove the immune system. A high percentage of the patients did not experience new episodes of brain lesions, relapse of MS symptoms or progress of their disabilities. The research comes with great hope for people who have this adverse condition.
